About the Project

Black History Month 2019

In March 2019, Eastside Community Heritage put out a call for nominations for women  of colour who are making a difference in their communities around east London. We received nominations for women from Hackney, Redbridge, Newham and Waltham Forest who we then contacted and interviewed for this exciting Black History Month project.

Throughout the interviews, the women discussed racism, prejudice and the struggles they have faced as women of colour in their professional and personal lives. However, they also talked about their cultures, feeling connected to the places their families are from - even if they hadn't visited themselves and what their heritage means to them. They have overcome barriers in their lives and their stories inspire people across the world.

We would like to thank all of the women involved in the project for their time and openness in sharing their stories so honestly.
